Talking Railway Safety
Last Friday we were joined by representative from The British Transport Police and Network Rail who spoke to our Year 7 & 8 pupils about the importance of being safe around our railway lines. Latest figures show that there were 18,517 trespass incidents on the British rail network in the last financial year (2022/23), 20 per cent of which (around 3,700) involved young people under the age of 18. Trespassing on the railway is incredibly dangerous, there were 11 people who died in accidents while trespassing in the year April 2022 to March 2023. Our guests explained how playing on or near our rail network can have disastrous consequences, how it can lead to injury, death, delay and incredible trauma to not only those who may be trespassing but the rail staff, passengers and first responders who may also be directly effected by it.
We hope this informative assembly helps our students stay away from the rail network, act carefully and sensibly at crossings and know what to do and who to report to should they witness an accident or trespass onto the network.
