Pause for Thought on Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated each year on the 27th of January. Each year we remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who were killed in ghettos, mass-shootings, concentration camps and extermination camps by Nazis and their collaborators in Europe. We also remember other groups of people who were persecuted by the Nazis. These include: Roma and Sinti people, Jehovah’s Witnesses, political opponents and many others. After the Holocaust we said ‘Never Again’ but humanity has failed to learn lessons from the Holocaust and genocides continue to happen around the world today. On Holocaust Memorial Day we remember the millions of men, women and children, who have been murdered in the genocides which followed- in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Staff and students spent Monday morning reflecting on why it is important to remember the Holocaust and on Wednesday the 27th at 7pm, they had the chance to attend an online virtual Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony. This year’s theme was ‘Be the light in the darkness’ and many took part in lighting a candle to remember those who were murdered for who they were and to stand against hatred and prejudice today.
