Numeracy plays a key part in every aspect of our modern world, no matter what you might be doing! From calculating costs of plane tickets and arranging flight times and connections to converting currency or the weight of luggage; numeracy is in every aspect of life at work, at play and in practical everyday activities at home and beyond.
At Sandhill View we recognise that having a solid grasp on numeracy is important to living an independent life. We use numeracy when we go shopping or plan a holiday, decide on a mortgage or decorate a room. Good numeracy is essential to us – as patients understanding health information, as citizens making sense of statistics and economic news or as customers searching for the best deals. Decisions in life are so often based on numerical information: to make the best choices, we need to be numerate.
The aim of the team at Sandhill View Academy is to raise the standards of numeracy of all of its students, so that they develop the ability to use numeracy skills effectively in all areas of the curriculum and the skills necessary to confidently cope with the demands of further education, employment and adult life. To achieve this we will work unrelentingly to improve levels of numeracy across the school and create a more positive ‘can-do’ attitude to maths and numeracy.
Students also study numeracy in form time. In ks3 they are completing our very exciting numeracy ninjas programme, where students can gain different belts all the way up to grandmaster! In ks4 students are working on numeracy with a focus on the skills needed for GCSE
“Good numeracy is the best protection against unemployment, low wages and ill health.”
