From School to Space!
Last week year 10 and 11 Art and Photography students visited Kielder Observatory as part of our Astrophotography partnership. Kielder Observatory is situated in Kielder Forest under some of the darkest skies in Europe. We arrived in the daylight and were given a tour of the observatory. Astrophotographer, Dan Monk explained how to successfully use a camera in the dark and how the cameras that are attached to telescopes can photograph our galaxy as well as stars and galaxies further away. Astronomer Adam Shore then showed us the telescopes and the mechanics of the Observatory. Students were then provided with Hot Chocolates to warm us up before heading outside for the rest of the evening to photograph the dark sky. Whilst is was a little cloudy, students managed to take some excellent photographs and experimented with light painting. We had the most amazing time taking part in this once in a lifetime experience!
